Ostrava is capital and administrative centre of the
Moravian-Silesian Region. It is the third largest city
in the Czech Republic by its population and the second
one by its area. It is an important traffic crossing
with a dense municipal transport network, 5 railway
stations and an international airport at Mosnov.
It is
also the seat of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava
and of University of Ostrava with almost 15 000 students;
there is also a private Business School Ostrava plc here.
There are about 200 sports fields, 5 outdoor and indoor
stadiums, 122 gymnasiums, 3 ice rink stadiums, 11 indoor
swimming pools and 5 summer lidos in the city. The
summer outdoor public swimming pool at Poruba is the
largest outdoor lido in the Czech Republic. There are
nearly 270 sports clubs active in the city
neighbourhoods encompassing variety of branches, many of
them enabling disabled people to engage in sports. The
city is a place, where regular international
competitions are held, e.g. Davis Cup, European
Volleyball Championship or European Latin American Dance
Championship. An athletics meeting Golden Spike – Super
Grand Prix is held every year. In spring 2004, Ostrava,
jointly with Prague, hosted Ice Hockey World
Championship.
